Pedrito Fernández

Died: August 19, 1998

Born in Cárdenas, Matanzas, the comic tenor PEDRITO FERNÁNDEZ.

Interpreter of Spanish and Cuban lyric repertoire. Closely linked to Lecuona's work since his debut—a small role in the premiere of Lola Cruz (1935)—he played the "negrito" characters in all his works and accompanied him on several of his international tours, mainly those of the premieres of María la O and El cafetal at the Álvarez Quintero theater in Madrid (1953).

In 1947 he joined the cast of Moreno Torroba's Spanish zarzuela company, presented at the National Theater in Havana (current García Lorca hall of the Gran Teatro de La Habana).

He performed the duties of second prompter in the production of Doña Francisquita by Vives, directed by Antonio Palacios, at the Payret theater (1961). He joined the National Lyric Theater of Cuba in 1967.

He directs and performs as Cándido in La revoltosa (1967), as the Niegus in La viuda alegre (1967), as Aníbal in Luisa Fernanda (1968).

He also appears in La leyenda del beso (1968), directed by Centeno, where he plays Gorón.

He performs in the Jorge Anckermann group at the Martí theater and works as a stage director for the Lyric Theater of Matanzas.

A year before his death, he stages Lecuona's zarzuela El batey for the National Lyric Theater of Cuba.

He died in Havana on August 19, 1998.
