Amalia Arriaza

The soprano was born in Santiago de Cuba. She studied music at the conservatories of Dulce María Serret and "Esteban Salas", both in her native city.

Already in Havana, she studies voice with Margarita Horruitiner and at the Instituto Superior de Arte.

At the beginning of her professional career she was part of various choral groups in her province and in the capital. In 1987 she made her debut at the Opera Nacional de Cuba, playing the role of Mary (last wife) in the world premiere of the opera Heminghway by Kasarián.

Later she sang the Priestess in Aida (1989) and the leading roles of Gilda in Rigoletto (1989); Lucia di Lammermoor (1993), and the role of Irma in the world premiere of the opera La taza de café by Juan Piñera (1994).

As a guest artist she performed with the Teatro Lírico de Pinar del Río Ernesto Lecuona in its production of Donizetti's opera Rita (1990), performed the same year in Santiago de las Vegas (Havana) and in Sancti Spíritus.

She has also developed intense concert activity. She has premiered works by contemporary composers Harlod Gramatges, Juan Piñera and Eduardo Morales, among others.

She has offered her interpretive art in Europe and Central and South America and currently performs as a soloist at the Centro Nacional de la Música de Conciertos.
