Alejandro Gil Álvarez

Outstanding film and television director and screenwriter. Graduate in Journalism from the University of Havana. Member of UNEAC and the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC).

Graduate in journalism from the University of Havana, he began in the audiovisual world as an assistant on the television series Algo más que soñar (1984) and later with the documentary series Historia del Arte Militar.

He made his directorial debut with Piensa en mí (1989). Later, he creates numerous works, especially in television, and in particular, dramatizations, video clips and some documentaries.

Noteworthy are Hazlo por Neruda (1997), La leyenda del rayo (1998), the acclaimed documentary Montaña de luz (2005) and his recent feature film La pared (2006) and Inocencia.

Later, as a Director, he has created documentaries, fiction films and videos and various television programs, as well as video clips; works that have won national and international awards.

He has participated as a jury member in the Caracol Awards of UNEAC, the 1st International TV and Video Festival, Havana 1995 and Vitral of the National Video Movement, where he was a member of its national coordinating group.

He was part of the Cuban delegation to the Oberhausen Short Film Festival, Federal Republic of Germany, and to the meeting between Swiss and Cuban filmmakers, Switzerland 1997, in addition to giving lectures and presentations at the University of Lausana and Ticino, as well as a personal exhibition at a Latin American cultural encounter in Berne, Switzerland.

In 1994, he participated in the Cuba-France youth meeting in Paris and in workshops on documentary and docudrama at the School of Communication of the University of Havana.

He was a jury member at the Bahia Film and Video Festival, Brazil 2000 and at the Latin American Film Festival of Trieste, Italy 2001.

He is a member of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC).
