Albita
Singer, composer, and Cuban musician known in the musical field as Albita. Two-time Grammy and Emmy winner, Albita is the most authentic Cuban singer from Havana who has managed to move the world through her music.
Her parents were known in Cuba as interpreters of traditional and guajira music, which assured Albita a launch as a singer from an early age. She began working professionally from her adolescence, achieving recognition among national performers of folk music.
She releases her first album Habrá Música Guajira (There Will Be Guajira Music) in 1988. In the early 1990s she signs work contracts in Colombia, from where she travels to the United States, making the city of Miami her permanent residence.
Since her arrival in Miami, Albita catches the attention of several renowned figures in the entertainment world who recognize her talent.
In 1994 she releases her first album in the United States No Se Parece a Nada produced by entrepreneur and artist Emilio Estefan. From this album, the song "Qué manera de quererte" and "Que culpa tengo yo" emerged as hits.
Her career in the United States has had several successes and has established her as one of the main exponents of Cuban culture.
Albita is "the reincarnation of a 1930s European singer, a Berlin cabaret singer transfused with Latin blood," says Los Angeles Times. As a young singer through her authentic roots, she became known for her dynamic contribution to the renewal of traditional Cuban music and bringing a very personal style to her compositions, musical arrangements, and singing.
Since arriving in Miami, FL in 1993, her electrifying and fascinating interpretation of contagious Cuban music has elevated her career to an international level, performing throughout Europe, Latin America, Australia, Africa, and Malaysia, where she has shared the stage with great figures such as Celia Cruz, Tito Puentes, Oscar de Leon, Gilberto Gil, Juan Luis Guerra, Tito Nieves, Daniela Mercury, Miriam Makeeba, Phil Collins, Melissa Etheridge, and Tony Bennett.
In 2000, world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz chooses Albita to be part of her book, "Women".
While performing in Little Havana in Miami, she began to attract the attention of celebrities such as Gianni Versace, Quincy Jones, Madonna, Sly Stallone, Paco de Lucia, Marco Antonio Muniz, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, among others. The performance combines all genres of Cuban music: rumba, mambo, son, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and folk. She does it with true authenticity to her Cuban roots. Her live performance is fascinating and unforgettable, portraying a true artist who came to stay.
Albita has recorded 8 albums in the United States and all have been nominated for Grammy Awards. In 2004, she created her own independent record label, Angels 'Dawn Records, where she recorded and released the twice Grammy-winning album titled "ALBITA LLEGO" which won in the category of "Best Contemporary Tropical Album of the Year" and for "Executive Producer" of the album.
