One of the quarantine fads among Cubans is comparing Yulieski Gurriel to everything. They compare him with Linares, with Kendrys, with "Cheíto" Rodríguez, with Michel Enríquez, with the Rooster of Morón… It doesn't matter, the idea is to call into question the quality of one of the best ballplayers in the history of the Island.
In the multiple social media groups, where thousands of Cuban baseball fans converge virtually, the practice has spread and, as is logical, a pitched battle of opinions has broken out between Gurriel's detractors and followers, exalted by his great home runs and judged by his errors.
"That's not going to change," Yulieski said recently in an interview with the Swing Completo portal, referring precisely to the eternal discussion among fans about his figure.
"To the people who follow me and those who don't follow me either, we have to respect their opinion. Cubans are very knowledgeable about baseball. I hope that in the not too distant future I can visit Cuba and be with them, I have always tried to do my best so that they are satisfied with my work," Yuli added in the dialogue with Yasel Porto.
The most famous of the Gurriel brothers has adapted to being in the eye of the hurricane, for better or for worse. Many are those who idolize him for his extraordinary game against Panama in the First Classic, which opened the Island's victorious path in that tournament.
