Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman secured his contract for the 2027 season on Saturday, August 15, 2026, after surpassing the 40-inning threshold that automatically triggers a vesting option in his deal with the Boston Red Sox. The milestone came during a 4-0 Red Sox win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Provided he passes his end-of-season physical, Chapman will remain with Boston in 2027 at a salary of $13 million. The 38-year-old, born in Holguín, is having one of his best seasons in years, posting a 1.99 ERA over 40 2/3 innings with 27 saves, tying him for sixth in Major League Baseball this season. His 394 career saves rank ninth all-time.
"I feel good. I feel comfortable here with the relationships I've built here within the organization," Chapman said. He added that his focus remains on staying healthy: "Try to work on things that I need to do so I don't miss any games." Interim manager Chad Tracy praised the closer's preparation as "elite."
Nicknamed "the Cuban Missile" for the record-setting fastball he once threw at 105.8 mph, Chapman debuted in the majors in 2010 and has won two World Series titles, with the Chicago Cubs in 2016 and the Texas Rangers in 2023. He remains one of the most accomplished relievers in the history of the sport and a strong future Hall of Fame candidate.
