Yordan Álvarez hits 41st homer and keeps Triple Crown chase alive

Cuban designated hitter Yordan Álvarez belted his 41st home run of the season on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, in Seattle and drove in three runs as the Houston Astros blanked the Mariners 7-0. Associated Press coverage said Álvarez went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the first inning and a 386-foot homer in the eighth that left the bat at 109.5 mph.

The blast tied him with Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero for the American League home-run lead. Álvarez leads the AL in batting average at .314 — five points ahead of Chandler Simpson — and has 102 RBIs, six behind Baltimore’s Pete Alonso. He also tops the league in slugging (.601), OPS (1.032), total bases (329) and walks (106).

The 29-year-old four-time All-Star had reached 40 homers on September 17 against Kansas City. Houston (78-79) sat tied with Texas atop the AL West with five games left. No player has won a Triple Crown since Miguel Cabrera in 2012, but Álvarez remains in the hunt in all three categories.

After beginning his career in Cuba with the Leñadores de Las Tunas, he left the island in search of an opportunity in Major League Baseball and later signed to play professionally in the United States.
