Cuban third baseman Yoán Moncada of the Los Angeles Angels will undergo right knee surgery after being transferred to the 60-day injured list on June 8, 2026.

The injury, initially described as knee inflammation, had not shown the expected improvement since Moncada first suffered it in late May. After limited progress, both the player and team opted for surgery. Recovery is expected to take at least five weeks, keeping him out until mid-July at the earliest.

At the time he was placed on the IL, Moncada had appeared in 41 games, hitting .189/.308/.297 with three home runs in 130 plate appearances. His return for the remainder of the 2026 season remains uncertain.

This marks the fifth consecutive season in which the Cuban infielder has missed time due to injury, a string of setbacks that has limited his ability to perform consistently. Moncada is playing his second season in Anaheim on a $4MM contract and will become a free agent in November 2026.

Born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, Moncada was once the top-ranked prospect in baseball. After starring with the Chicago White Sox from 2017 to 2023, recurring injuries have prevented the talented switch-hitter from reaching his ceiling on a consistent basis.
