Yamilé Salomón first Cuban at the New York art fair

February 19, 2020

Joy Color is an independent Cuban brand that specializes in creating jewelry from recycled materials. At the beginning of February, Yamilé Salomón, its creator, became the first Cuban to exhibit at NY Now, considered the most important art fair in New York.

Joy Color, as its name indicates, is distinguished by its colorful and tropical creations, which mix materials such as acrylic scraps, rope and stainless steel, among others.

According to the NY Now website, "each piece is intended to portray, defend and expand the 'made in Cuba' design. The limited editions of handmade pieces in a creation style defined as 'tropical minimalism', characterized by joy, contrast and synthesis, with a meaning that emanates from the minimal, are at the very essence of the brand and of the Island that inspires it: Cuba"

This is not the first important event in which Joy Color has participated. Just over a year after its creation, it has already been present at the second edition of the Havana Fashion Tour; at the Havana Design Biennial; at the collective exhibition Tela por Donde Cortar, which was presented at Fábrica de Arte last October; and at celebrations for the anniversary of Magazine:AMPM and Gay Pride Day.

For this Cuban designer, success began by sharing her creations on Instagram.
