The first dancer of the National Ballet of Cuba (BNC) Viengsay Valdés will participate in the fifteenth edition of the Tokyo World Ballet Festival (WBF), according to the official website of the event.
The prestigious international dance event opened its doors on July 27 in the Japanese capital and will conclude on August 18 with a special performance.
Valdés will take to the Japanese stage alongside Brazilian Daniel Camargo, principal dancer of the Dutch National Ballet, to perform the work Muñecos, a contemporary ballet piece written by Cuban master Alberto Méndez, National Dance Prize 2004.
The presentation by Valdés and Camargo is part of a segment of the 15 WBF program that will take place between August 8 and 12.
This is the third time this important figure of the BNC has participated in this competition that brings together the best companies in the world.
The Tokyo WBF, which is held every three years, is one of the most relevant events in universal dance where the most talented and renowned dancers of the moment come together.
Its first edition, in 1976, caused a sensation by bringing together three legends such as Prima Ballerina Assoluta and director of the BNC, Alicia Alonso, Margot Fonteyn from the United Kingdom and Maya Plisetskaya from the Soviet Union.
According to the organization's website, the event is attended by dancers from different artistic backgrounds who represent a wide variety of repertoires and styles.
The festival also offers the opportunity to observe an overview of the current ballet scene.
