Cuban visual artist Arístides Hernández (Ares) is mounting his exhibition "Mestizo" today, which will be inaugurated next Friday, September 8, at 4:00 p.m., local time, at the gallery 23 y 12 in this capital.
The exhibition, curated by art critic Meira Marrero, is composed of more than twenty pieces created on the Caribbean island and in Brazil that include graphic humor, painting, sculpture, assemblage and installation.
According to Art History professor Odette Bello, they are a part of the artist's most recent production and a summary of his concerns, of the constant process of search and reflection about his identity, about the history that conditions him and that has determined the current geopolitical configuration of the world.
"Ares proposes to review history and questions hegemonic and civilizing Western narratives, revealing the episodes that are omitted in epic macro-narratives," she indicated.
The exhibition, open to the public until next October, is carried out with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the National Council of Plastic Arts, the Cuban Fund of Cultural Assets, its direction of art galleries Collage Habana, the gallery 23 y 12 and the Brazilian art institute Sacatar.
A graduate with a Doctorate in Medicine and Specialist in Psychiatry, Ares (60 years old) is a self-taught artist who works in Havana as an independent creator doing graphic humor, illustrations, posters and painting.
He has published 23 books, illustrated another hundred and obtained 170 awards at events of an international nature, among them, the Grand Prix of the World Press Cartoon in Portugal and the Ranan Lurie Prize of the United Nations Organization.
In Cuba, the renowned cartoonist holds the Distinction for National Culture and the National Humor Prize. His works are part of private and institutional collections on five continents.
