The renowned Cuban violinist Evelio Tieles was recently honored in Faenza, a city in northern Italy, in the Emilia-Romagna region, with a concert organized in his honor as part of the program for the twenty-fifth edition of Italian Independent Music, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of that European nation.

The musical evening was held at Palazzo Milzetti, an example of Italian neoclassicism, where the attending audience enjoyed the masterful interpretation of the work Gran Señora by the distinguished Cuban composer Ignacio Cervantes performed by pianist Giancarlo Peroni.

The work was dedicated especially to the recognized pedagogue of the Island, and then joined on stage by violinist Martino Colombo, only 16 years old, who brilliantly performed works by N. Paganini, E. Elgar, F. Kreisler, J. Massenet, and H. Wjeniswski.

The concert in honor of Maestro Tieles, promoter in Cuba of the teaching of bowed string instruments, was made possible thanks to the support of the Circle of Solidarity with Cuba of Ravennate, which bears the name of Vilma Espín.

Maestro Tieles thanked the Ministry of Culture of Italy, the authorities of Faenza, and especially the Circle of Solidarity of Faenza.

Tieles is one of the most important performers in the Cuban musical sphere, who worked as a professor and head of the string department of the National School of Art and the Higher Institute of Art, from its founding until 1984.

He was also founder, together with bassist Orestes Urfé, of the Chamber Orchestra of the National School of Art and the Chamber Orchestra of the Vila-Seca Conservatory in Barcelona, Spain; as well as the Chamber Ensemble of Havana.

He was also the promoter of the Days of Cuban Music; the Contemporary Music Festivals of the socialist countries and created the Festival of Contemporary Music of Havana.

Together with his brother Cecilio, he forms the Tieles Duo, for which recognized composers of the Island such as Harold Gramatges, José Ardévol, and Gottfried Glöckner have written works. In turn, the renowned Cuban composers Alfredo Diez Nieto and Roberto Valera, and the Spanish composer Ramón Barce have dedicated works to him.
