Filmmaker Rebeca Chávez translates Cuban women writers' poetry to film

February 10, 2022

The premiere of the film Charo Guerra and Georgina Herrera: facing the mirror again took place at the Charles Chaplin Cinema in this capital, while room 1 of the Multicine Infanta will host screenings of this release until February 13.

According to details on the digital site Cubacine, the film produced by the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry and Wajiro fIilms, explores the common ground between both artists regarding poetry, racial conflicts and their stance toward the designs of patriarchal society.

Presented during the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, whose second stage took place in December 2021, the documentary presents its protagonists through their poetry, lived experiences and professional experiences, the text notes.

This approach from cinema to two important women of national culture constitutes a way of honoring Herrera's legacy, "Black poet, defender of her roots," who passed away last December at the age of 85 due to Covid-19.

The narrative of the audiovisual is based on poetry fragments by Guerra such as Hologram of the tropics; State of mind; I say, you say, we say; as well as Herrera's text Africa, which became a tribute to her roots and a manifesto of gratitude for her origins.

Over the course of 30 minutes, the documentary explores the trajectory of both writers, connected by poetry and considered examples of feminine authenticity.
