Prisis Leidys Ruiz, first Cuban in diving world semifinal

February 8, 2024

Prisis Leidys Ruiz achieved an excellent performance today for Cuban women's diving and became the first Caribbean athlete to advance to a semifinal in the history of the World Championships of Aquatic Sports.

Our representative secured that performance on the three-meter springboard at the world competition in Doha, a specialty where she finished in 13th place in the preliminary round and secured a spot among the 18 competitors who advanced to the next round. Likewise, that performance practically ensures her a spot for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Prisis received a score of 262.35 points, thanks above all to the consistency achieved in her five attempts. Even so, if in the semifinals she manages to improve the execution seen in her dive with the highest degree of difficulty, she could well aspire to improve her total.

In any case, for her this has been her best world competition, as she also adds the 22nd place in the one-meter springboard, a non-Olympic modality.

Alongside her for Cuba also competed Anisley García, finally placed in 20th place with a score of 245.40, only 0.70 points away from being among the 18 semifinalists. Just as happened to our representative on the platform, she must now wait for confirmations from other countries about their qualified divers to aspire to an Olympic spot on the springboard.

The preliminary round of this specialty was dominated by Australian Maddison Keeney (304.45), the only one among the 52 competitors with a total above 300 points. Behind her finished Chinese Yiwen Chen (297.75) and American Sarah Bacon (297.45).

In addition to Prisis Leidys's presence in the semifinals, the Greater Antilles still has the competition of Carlos Daniel Ramos on the ten-meter platform, a modality where he will also seek to reach the semifinals to aspire to the Olympic ticket.
