The National Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities 2021 was awarded on January 6th to Doctor in Economic Sciences, Full Professor and Professor Emeritus, José Luis Rodríguez García.

The decision was influenced by "sustained contributions in the field of economic science and historical science in the specialty of economics, systematic work aimed at covering gaps in the knowledge of a branch of learning key to understanding the political, social and economic course of Cuba," argued in its final report by the jury presided over by Isabel Monal and made up of Yoel Cordoví, René González Barrios, José Ernesto Nováez and Jorge Hernández Martínez.

The document adds the academic and former minister's qualities in decision-making and his capacity to elucidate problems and provide essential elements of judgment to solve them, especially in a sociopolitical scenario as complex as that of the 1990s.

In this regard, it is worth noting that among the responsibilities of the award recipient, his tenure as Minister of Economy and Planning of Cuba stands out during the hardest years of the so-called Special Period.

He also served as Vice President of the Council of Ministers and member of the Council of State. He was also part of the Scientific Council of the "Raúl Roa Kourí" Institute of International Relations and is a specialist in Cuban Economics and International Economic Relations.

To all of the above is added his teaching contribution as a trainer of generations of economists.
