Cuban Journalist Daisy Ballmajó Leaves Newscast for Her Own Program on Telemundo 51

December 20, 2022

Cuban journalist Daisy Ballmajó will stop being the anchor of the flagship newscast on Telemundo 51 after eight years in the position.

Next Friday Ballmajó will present her last Noticiero Telemundo 51, a leading space in South Florida television, and will return with an informative variety program in January.

Telemundo 51 announced that fellow Cuban journalist and anchor Alejandra Molina will be her replacement and the new co-anchor with Fausto Malavé as conductor of the flagship newscast, which airs daily at 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

Although Telemundo 51 assured that in this new role, Ballmajó fulfills her "dream of sharing with the community something more than the day's news," CiberCuba learned that the journalist had requested a change in her work duties for the coming year and an opportunity for a new program opened up.

The decision is not related to a salary and staff cuts plan that the channel is beginning 2023 with, according to sources at the station speaking on condition of anonymity. Ballmajó declined to comment to CiberCuba when contacted.

In the channel's official announcement of this change in its staff, the station praised Ballmajó's work over these years.

"Since her arrival at Telemundo 51 in 2010, Daisy has been a constant and valued presence for the Hispanic audience of South Florida, presenting the most important news for our market," the statement emphasizes.

For her part, Molina, who will now share Noticiero Telemundo 51 with Malavé, began at the channel in 2015 as an anchor for the morning newscast and later became "the anchor of the 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. newscast."

Molina's place on the 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. newscasts will be taken by Lisette Mari, who will accompany Gloria Ordaz as co-anchor, the information adds.

In February of last year, Ballmajó, who resides in the city of Miami with her partner, Cuban sports journalist Bobby Salamanca Jr., took advantage of her birthday to give thanks for life, her friends, and her family.

Months earlier, Ballmajó worried her followers after sharing on her social media the news that she had undergone surgery in order to prevent "something worse."

"Friends, thanks to everyone who has asked about me. I am recovering from a necessary surgical procedure for my health. On this journey it's not my first surgery, although it is the one requiring the most recovery time. But it's going well," she wrote on her Facebook profile.

Fortunately, the journalist's recovery was prompt and satisfactory and shortly after she was able to return to the Telemundo set.
