Alexis Triana Hernández Named as New President of Icaic

November 10, 2023

Alexis Triana Hernández was presented this Thursday as the new president of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (Icaic) before the institution's board of directors and employees, according to Cubacine.

Triana, a graduate in Journalism from the University of Havana, has accumulated a long history as a cultural manager and promoter, beginning as president of the AHS in Holguín, president of the Provincial Council of Performing Arts, and later as provincial director of Culture in that province for 13 years, with recognized achievements such as the founding of the International Festival of Artists and Cultural Promoters "Romerías de Mayo" and the vice-presidency of the International Festival of Poor Cinema in Gibara.

Later, in Havana he was vice-president of the National Council of Performing Arts, national coordinator of the Culture Mission Corazón Adentro in Venezuela, director of Communications, and subsequently founded the Multimedia Studio and the digital channel CREARTV, as well as the Streaming Network Cuba in the Ministry of Culture, as a network in service of culture with the participation of various audiovisual production companies and direct transmission of its content through Caribe Channel and through social networks.

Triana assumes the presidency of Icaic at a time when the institution is working alongside creators in developing the proposals being presented to the Temporary Working Group for attention to the development of Cuban cinema.

Triana replaces acting president Susana Molina in the position, who assumed responsibility at the head of the organization last July, following the resignation of Ramón Samada "at his personal request." Samada was president of ICAIC since 2017.

L9 under the command of Alfredo Guevara poses enormous challenges to Triana's immediate work.

The restructuring of ICAIC's senior management occurs at a time of massive demands from the Cuban filmmaking sector to dismantle mechanisms of film censorship and receive a public apology for the improper use on state television of the documentary La Habana de Fito, by Juan Pin Vilar.
