The prestigious Cuban scientist Dr. Juan Kouri passed away unexpectedly last Wednesday, June 17, in France while on a work visit to that European nation.
Kouri, who had traveled to France from Mexico, the country where he had resided since the nineties, suffered a heart attack and died instantly with nothing that could be done to save him.
Although Kouri worked at the Center for Advanced Sciences in Mexico, he traveled frequently to the island and was aware of many of the investigations being carried out in his native country.
The deceased was born in Havana on May 2, 1941, and was the son of renowned scientist Pedro Kouri, who is considered the father of tropical medicine in Cuba for the amount of important research he conducted.
Juan Kouri specialized in molecular biology, for twenty years he was director of the National Center for Scientific Research (CNIC), and in the eighties he served as vice minister of Public Health for Science and Technology.
Additionally, he wrote several scientific books, taught in higher education in Cuba, delivered numerous lectures, and participated in countless investigations with distinguished international centers.
The scientist's mortal remains will be transferred to Cuba and will be buried with his family.
