Dr. José Antonio Cabrera Gómez, an eminent Cuban neurologist who enjoyed great prestige in the medical profession on the island, passed away on January 7 in Havana, according to sources close to him.
A post on social media by the International Center for Neurological Restoration (CIREN) that reported the event described Cabrera as "a simple man, teacher of many and very great as a human being". The post did not detail the causes of death of the physician.
Dr. José Antonio Cabrera Gómez was one of the founders of the School of Neurology in Cienfuegos and a prominent Cuban neurologist, according to CIREN.
At that center, he served for years as head of the multiple sclerosis group and also stood out as a researcher of high international prestige.
"He also excelled for his humanitarian qualities, magnificent person, colleague and friend. In the opinion of many who knew him, Cuba has lost a pillar of Neurology in our country and his mark will remain to guide the path of specialists in this field", wrote the CIREN profile.
Among the comments on the post, dozens of people referred to the doctor as "Cabrerita" and mentioned that he was an excellent doctor and human being.
Both the CIREN post and several friends who commented on it sent their condolences to the family of the deceased.
Dr. Cabrera Gómez's contributions to scientific research and the training of health professionals include comparative publications on the causes of morbidity from neurological diseases in the 1980s, published in that decade.
Additionally, there are various Clinical Practice Guidelines for health professionals and for multiple sclerosis patients, published after the 2000s.
