The iconic Cuban actress and singer Mirtha Medina will re-premiere the musical "A Boyfriend for Veneranda" in Miami, written by Maité Vera with songs by Raúl Gómez. The work premiered on Cuban television in the mid-1970s and will now arrive in March at the stage of Teatro Manuel Artime.
Medina, who has been based in Miami for 30 years, holds especially fond memories of this musical from her work in Cuba, and now production conditions allow her to re-premiere the work that many of her admirers frequently asked her about.
"Many people asked me when I would re-premiere that musical of which they held such good memories. They said that if I acted in other musicals, why not in that one, without considering the expense involved in mounting a production of that genre," the artist expressed to Nuevo Herald.
The plot of "A Boyfriend for Veneranda" revolves around a librarian devoted to the world of books who has let the years pass without seeking a partner. Thanks to the efforts of her cousin Carmita and Carmita's boyfriend, the spinster will be able to find her perfect match.
This re-premiere will feature the adaptation by Lázaro Rodríguez and performances by Ramoncito Veloz, Ana Lidia Méndez, Jesús Brañas, Lourdes Libertad, and Ernesto Molina.
"The original version had a more innocent tone. But in this one there are plenty of intrigues and even two characters have been added that will make the audience laugh a lot," she noted, after announcing that from the old soundtrack, written by Raúl Gómez, they only kept two songs. The rest of the songs were composed by Otto Night.
From the original cast, Ramoncito Veloz will also return. "Working with Mirtha is a delight. Apart from being a great comedian and very good singer, she is a very down-to-earth woman," the actor told the press.
In Mirtha Medina's career, trained at the Musical Theater of Havana under the direction of Alfonso Arau, stand out the musicals "My Fair Lady," "Hello, Dolly!" and "The Three-Penny Opera," among about twenty productions. From her Miami period, "La bella Otero," "Paper Goddesses," "The War of the Eyelashes," and "Magic," under the direction of Pedro Román, stand out.
