Cuban mathematician Yusnier Viera broke a world record this past weekend at Miami-Dade College. In one minute, he correctly calculated 159 calendar dates between the years 1600 and 2100. In doing so, he surpassed the previous record of 140 dates.
Viera, originally from Bejucal, Mayabeque, expressed his happiness about breaking this record and called himself "the new world record holder". The challenge consists of a group of judges giving him a calendar date and he must say what day of the week that date corresponds to. On his fourth attempt, he achieved 159 correct answers.
Known as "The Human Calendar", Viera has obtained several world records related to calculating the day of the week for any given date on the Gregorian calendar. In addition to competing and breaking records, he has dedicated himself to education, developing methods to improve mental calculation skills in students and adults.
According to his own words, his mission is to promote tools that help all students succeed. In this regard, he has worked on developing a mobile application to promote mathematics education. His passion and dedication have made him a respected figure both in academic circles and with the general public.
