The famous Cuban journalist María Elvira Salazar triumphed in the Republican primaries of Florida's 27th district, and will be fighting against Democrat Donna Shalala for a seat in Congress in November. María Elvira won with 79% of the votes, surpassing Raymond Molina (11%) and Juan Fiol (10%).
Salazar will face off against Shalala once again, who defeated her in 2018 to occupy the seat that Ileana Ros-Lehtinen left upon her retirement, according to local media Sun Sentinel.
The 27th is an electoral district for the United States Congress and was created in South Florida during 2012, as a result of the 2010 Census, becoming effective starting in January 2013. The first candidates ran in the 2012 House elections and the winner took the seat of the 113th Congress on January 3, 2013.
That district includes the city of Miami, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, West Miami, Pinecrest, Key Biscayne, South Miami, North Bay Village, Cutler Bay, and Palmetto Bay.
María Elvira Salazar was born in Little Havana (Miami), to exiled Cuban parents. The journalist was a news presenter at Telemundo for a long period of time, and won wide audiences with a program on Mega TV.
Salazar, who has received five Emmy awards, is characterized by her critical stance toward the governments of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.
