Cuban singer-songwriter Liuba María Hevia considers it a privilege to share a concert with the National Symphony Orchestra (OSN) on July 22nd, marking 35 years of her artistic career.
One celebrates life as one is, and I am obsessive with my work, I live for music, said the singer and composer who is currently putting the finishing touches on a documentary about her late compatriot Teresita Fernández, an essential musical creator in the country.
With 35 years of professional experience, it is difficult for Hevia to define ages because she is still assailed by the same sensations, fears, questions, her natural shyness, the need to keep learning, and she still loses sleep in the early morning hours before a concert.
Thanks to the support of the Cuban Institute of Music, the show at the National Theater in this capital will be the first in a series that she will perform in September and October with symphony orchestras from various provinces of the island.
The confirmed venues are located in Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, Camagüey, Villa Clara and Matanzas, where the symphony orchestras from each of those cities are already studying the scores adapted by Beatriz Corona, Guajiro Miranda and Wilma Alba, among other arrangers.
That is my way of paying homage to my teachers, to my family, affirmed Hevia in a meeting with the press.
As a journey through her work, the artist will perform genres at the concerts such as country music—which marks her early works—trovador song, tango and children's songs.
The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) named the singer-songwriter in 2012 as an Ambassador of Goodwill, in recognition of her sustained and careful social work focused on children, not only in theaters, but also in neighborhoods and hospitals throughout the country.
The also composer recently published Parallel Lives, a four-volume album that is dear to her because she shares duets with beloved singer-songwriters, Cuban and foreign, performers who are defenders of singer-songwriter music.
Among several are Marta Gómez, from Colombia; Georgina Hassán, from Argentina; María Tejada, from Ecuador; Luis Pastor, from Spain; Danny Rivera, from Puerto Rico; Luis Represas, from Portugal; Víctor Víctor, Maridalia Hernández, Pavel Núñez and José Antonio Rodríguez, from Dominican Republic.
Also participating are performers from Cuba such as Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, Gema Corredera, Israel Rojas, Carlos Varela, Omara Portuondo, Beatriz Márquez, Kelvis Ochoa, Luna Manzanares, Raúl Torres and Ivette Cepeda.
Among the guests at the concert in Havana are the young vocalist Annie Garcés, the National Children's Choir and several singing groups.
