At just 20 years old, Leyanis Pérez grows by the day in the triple jump. In the last season she achieved Cuba's youth national record, qualified for the Olympic Games and won the Junior Pan American Games, a performance that placed her as the rising star of the specialty on the Island. And now, in her indoor debut, she once again attracts attention.
The Caribbean athlete commanded the event at a meet organized in the French city of Miramas, a competition where she also left behind Portuguese Patricia Mamona and Spanish Ana Peleteiro, silver and bronze medalists at the last summer Games. From the second round of jumps, Leyanis reached the top and never abandoned it.
Ultimately she ended the day with a best jump of 14.47 m that instantly places her as third in the specialty this year, only behind Thea Lafond (DMA-14.62m) and Jasmine Moore (USA-14.55m). In turn, that represents her third best jump in history, achieved no less in her debut in indoor competitions.
In addition to that leap, achieved on her fourth attempt, Leyanis registered a sequence of 14.10 m, 14.38 m, 13.99 m, a foul and 14.15 m to finish. Against her, Patricia Mamona closed with 14.17 m and Peleteiro concluded two centimeters behind.
In sixth place finished the main figure of women's triple jump in Cuba, Liadagmis Povea, with a modest 13.79 m. However, the Caribbean athlete has demonstrated sustained growth in recent seasons and has already shown that she is also ready to battle both in the upcoming indoor world championship and at the world event in the open air, scheduled for the summer of this year in Eugene.
