De la Uz is nominated in the Best Female Supporting Performance category for her role in the film "El mundo de Nelsito", while Amores competes for Best Female Performance in "La Mujer Salvaje".
In different categories, Cuban actresses Laura de la Uz and Lola Amores are among the candidates for the Platino Awards, whose ceremony will take place on April 20 in Xcaret park, in the Mexican Riviera Maya.
De la Uz is nominated in the Best Female Supporting Performance category for her role in the film El mundo de Nelsito, while Amores competes for Best Female Performance in La Mujer Salvaje.
Recognized inside and outside of Cuba for her performances in Hello Hemingway, Madagascar and La pared de las palabras, de la Uz takes on the character of Carmela in the film.
El mundo de Nelsito has dark humor undertones and is dedicated to cinematographer Raúl Pérez Ureta, who passed away two years ago, and who worked on several of Pérez's works. The story takes place in locations that span throughout the capital, fundamentally Alamar, where the protagonists live. But also in Boyeros, Plaza de la Revolución, Habana del Este and 10 de Octubre.
Nelsito, the protagonist of the film, is a 16-year-old autistic teenager who runs away from home, showing different scenarios from his imagination that connect the people around him. Upon his return, uncertainty is created about the true nature of the characters and how accurate Nelsito's perceptions are.
Meanwhile, La mujer salvaje, by debut director Alan González, premiered last September at the Toronto International Film Festival, and won three awards at the 33rd edition of the Ceará Film Festival, which took place in Brazil between November 25 and December 1.
The lead actress, Lola Amores, celebrated the film's triumph on her social networks in the categories of Best Film, Best Leading Performance and Best Sound. It is also the winner of the second call of the Cuban Film Promotion Fund (FFCC), produced by Cacha Films, a company founded and led by Claudia Calviño.
The film is a completely Cuban production, co-written by its director and Nuri Duarte. It tells the story of a mother who fights for her son's love. It marks the debut of child actor Jean Marcos Fraga. Also participating are Isora Morales, Grisell Monzón, Yaité Ruiz, Leandro Sen, Afrodreak, Yailín Coppola and Jorge Perrugorría.
The feature film is González's (1987) debut, a graduate of the Universidad de las Artes with a degree in Audiovisual Communication and a specialty in screenwriting from the Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV de San Antonio de los Baños.
Critics who are members of the Cuban Association of Film Press (ACPC) chose through a survey the film as the best Cuban fiction feature film exhibited on the island during 2023.
The Platino Awards are known for being the meeting point for talent in Ibero-American cinema and television. During the presentation ceremony at the Cineteca Nacional in Mexico City, the list of nominees from 168 audiovisual works in competition was revealed.
