Cuban discus thrower Yaimé Pérez recently abandoned the island's delegation that attended the World Athletics Championship held in the U.S. city of Eugene, in Oregon.
"La Rusa," as the 31-year-old from Santiago is known, was champion at the World Athletics Championship in Doha 2019 with a throw of 69.17 meters and is also a Bronze medal winner at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Yaimé Pérez "has a leading role in the island's roster, which has notable changes compared to the group presented at the last event under the symbol of the five rings in Japan's capital. Despite remaining below her usual marks in the current athletic season, La Rusa will be one of the medal contenders in a discipline dominated by American Valarie Allman and Croatian Sandra Perkovic," the state Cuban news agency Prensa Latina reported last week.
The XVIII World Athletics Championship was held at Hayward Field stadium, in the city of Eugene, in the state of Oregon, between July 15 and 24, organized by World Athletics and the U.S. track and field federation.
The flight of Cuban athletes during international events is becoming increasingly frequent.
