Long jumper Juan Miguel Echevarría maintained his undefeated record during the current indoor track and field season and with his success this Wednesday at the Madrid meeting secured first place in the winter circuit. With this result the Caribbean athlete achieves his third victory of the year and closes his indoor track season.

Although he experienced his most modest competition of 2021, the world bronze medalist in the outdoors now dominated with a best jump of 8.14 m. That mark, achieved on his first attempt, was the only one exceeding eight meters among all the competitors. After that performance, the Cuban had a sequence of 7.77 m on his second attempt, passed his third, achieved 7.98 m on the fourth and closed with a no-jump and poor 6.46 m.

Second place in the event went to Ukrainian Vladyslav Mazur, with 7.98 m achieved on his third attempt. Behind him finished German Maximilian Entholzner (7.81 m) and local favorite Eusebio Cáceres, modest with a poor 7.68 m.

Juan Miguel's victory adds to his first-place finishes at the Karlsruhe and Lievin meets, with respective marks of 8.18 m and 8.25 m. Those performances gave the Caribbean athlete the top spot in the World Indoor Tour, a competition system organized by World Athletics to open each year's season. Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou and German Thobias Montler followed him.

Also Cuban triple jumper Liadagmis Povea finished in third place in her event at the track and field meet held in Madrid, Spain, where she achieved a mark of 14.02 meters (m).

Povea, winner of the bronze medal at the 2019 Lima Pan American Games, reached that mark on her first attempt, and although her six jumps were valid and close to 14 m she could not reach her personal best, achieved on January 29 in Karlsruhe, Germany.

The Cuban athlete debuted this year with a victory at the indoor stop in Karlsruhe, where she reached 14.54 m.

Now on Spanish soil she fell short of that mark in the triple jump, which had American Tori Franklin (14.22 m) as the winner, while Portuguese Patricia Mamona (14.21 m) had to settle for second place.
