The young Cuban scientist Sandra Delfín de León has been recognized with the Unesco Prize for Young Scientists, as announced this Friday by the United Nations organization.
The prize, which seeks to promote a new generation of men and women of science from around the world prepared to address issues of ecology and sustainability, was decided by the International Coordinating Council of the Program on Man and the Biosphere (MAB), which recognized six young scientists from around the world.
Delfín de León was awarded for her work on the cultivation, propagation and assisted reproduction of stony corals for the study of reef restoration.
"The MAB Program has awarded prizes of up to 5,000 US dollars each year since 1989 to encourage young researchers to conduct work on ecosystems, natural resources and biodiversity to support sustainable development objectives," Unesco highlighted in its statement.
The selection was announced during the annual meeting of the MAB Council, which was held virtually on October 27 and 28.
The scientist, who works in the biology department of the National Aquarium of Cuba, was chosen in this 2020 edition along with other young people from Indonesia, Nigeria, Philippines and Romania.
