With a touch of joy and nostalgia, each occasion is experienced when a current achievement surpasses one of the emblematic ones… This is how today's new national youth triple jump record is being received, with which Jordan Díaz left behind by one centimeter the old record set by Pedro Pérez Dueñas.
Many stars passed through the specialty on the Island, and none had been able to erase the 17.40 meters with which Pérez Dueñas reigned at the Cali 1971 Pan American Games, registered at that time as a world record.
But as everything comes to an end, this Friday one of the talents of the future achieved that 17.41 meters that amazed specialists during a competitive test held at the Havana-based Estadio Pedro Marrero.
Jordan reigned a year ago at the planetary level among cadets with a record of 17.30 meters, which is the best mark of all time for those under 18, and confirmed himself as a rising star when in mid-February last he marked 17.32 at the Marrero itself.
Now he went further, and his new mark not only ratifies him as the favorite for the world throne among juveniles, which will be disputed in just over a month in Tampere, Finland. It also brings him closer to an announced dream: breaking the world record of 17.50 meters, held by German Volker Mai since 1985.
Jordan's record was not the only happy moment of this day at the capital venue, as the report from statistician Alfredo Sánchez notes that there were plenty of good performances: the fourth place finisher in the triple jump from the past World Championship, Cristian Nápoles, was second now with 17.28 meters, his personal best.
