Joel Despaigne is now officially a member of the International Volleyball Hall of Fame, but he missed his own ceremony. The former Cuban attacker, the first player from Cuba's men's national team to receive the honor, could not travel to Holyoke, Massachusetts, on Saturday, October 17, because the U.S. consulate in Rome denied his visa, he said in an interview with Prensa Latina that was also reported by 14ymedio and Asere Noticias.

Despaigne, who lives in Chieti, Italy, said the decision arrived by email, stating that neither he nor his wife met the requirements. She was told she could reapply; he was not. He said Hall of Fame organizers had provided a support letter for his application and, after the denial, offered to induct him alongside the Class of 2027. U.S. authorities have not publicly explained the decision.

Despaigne said he felt "very sad and disappointed" and blamed "issues of the U.S. consulate, of politics." "I have never agreed that sports should be mixed with politics. Sport is an international thing, for one athlete to compete against another," he said. A recorded message from him was shown during the ceremony: "If people still remember, it means I left a mark."

Born in Santiago de Cuba on July 2, 1966, and nicknamed "El Diablo," Despaigne played some 350 international matches for Cuba. He was central to the 1989 World Cup title and the silver medal at the 1990 World Championship, won Pan American gold in 1991 and played at the Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 Olympics. He is the ninth Cuban in the Hall, after coach Eugenio George and seven members of the women's team known as the Caribbean Queens.

Volleyball, Sports

Joël Despaigne Charles, nicknamed "El Diablo" ("The Devil"), is a retired Cuban volleyball player born on July 2, 1966, in Santiago de Cuba. Regarded as one of the best outside hitters in the world in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he captained Cuba's national team and made more than 350 appearances wearing the national jersey. His vertical leap, estimated at around one meter, and his spike speed of roughly 120 km/h (75 mph) made him one of the most feared attackers in volleyball history.
