On the 103rd anniversary of Alicia Alonso's birth, the bibliographic and documentary exhibition Alicia Alonso en Nuestra América was inaugurated at the José Antonio Echeverría library at Casa de las Américas.
In collaboration with the Dance Museum, the exhibition displays documents, photographs, posters, and programs at the Havana cultural institution that evidence the passage of Prima Ballerina Assoluta through Latin America, from the continental tour of 1949 to those in which she served as director and choreographer in 2017.
Likewise, a selection of decorations and awards received by the artist is displayed to visitors.
Miguel Cabrera, historian of the National Ballet of Cuba, recalled before those present the character of the majestic dancer and her influence on the development of Latin American ballet.
Along with several intellectuals, the director of the National Dance Museum, researcher Pedro Simón, also dedicated some words in accompanying the selection and curation of the exhibition.
Meanwhile, the vice president of Casa de las Américas, Jaime Gómez, recalled the intrinsic friendship between Alicia Alonso and Haydee Santamaría, heroine and founder of the institution, to which Alonso belonged as family since its founding.
The inauguration of this cultural initiative coincided with the date commemorating Ibero-American Dance Day, in addition to being framed within the celebrations for her birthday and the 80th anniversary of her debut in the role of Giselle.
