Google's search engine paid tribute this Thursday to the legendary Cuban singer and songwriter María Teresa Vera, with the creation of a "doodle" —temporary alteration of the homepage logo— for the artist's 125th birthday.

María Teresa Vera, considered one of the most outstanding figures in Cuban music and the Ibero-American songbook of the twentieth century, was born on February 6, 1895. The performer and guitarist was the granddaughter of enslaved people and daughter of a Spanish military officer. At the same time, she began to play the instrument thanks to the suggestion of another great of the era, Manuel Corona.

During her prolific professional career, she accumulated more than 183 recordings and a dozen hits among which stand out: "Por qué me siento triste", "No me sabes querer" and "Yo quiero que tú sepas". However, her most remembered work is —without a doubt— the bolero-habanera "Veinte Años", whose lyrics belong to Guillermina Aramburu.

The singer died in La Habana, on December 17, 1965.
