Raiza O´Farril, Legend of Cuban Volleyball, Passes Away

The distinguished Cuban volleyball player Raiza O´Farril, two-time Olympic champion and world titleholder, passed away in this capital at the age of 51, a victim of cancer.

"From INDER we share the pain of family and friends," expressed the president of INDER, who highlighted the trajectory of the charismatic player, "member of the golden generation of the Morenas del Caribe."

For her part, Mireya Luis expressed her infinite sorrow at the death of whom she considers her sister and on the court shared with the setter of the team that triumphed at the Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 Games, as well as at the Brazil 1994 World Championship, among the most relevant results.

"She was an example of modesty and humility, an excellent person, mother and friend. A Warrior who leaves an example of stoicism, a patriot and great human being. Light for her Soul. We will always continue together harvesting victories and joy for our beloved people.

The Brazilian Ary S. Graca, president of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), sent a message in which he expresses his sorrow to the authorities of Cuban volleyball and sports, highlighting the dedication and passion of Rayza O´Farril.

He adds that the Caribbean player will always be in the hearts of the world volleyball family for what she also fought for the development of the sport she loved.

Rayza was born on April 17 in the town of San Diego del Valle, municipality of Cifuentes, province of Villa Clara.

After being part for many years of the legendary Morenas del Caribe team, she continued to excel at the Manuel Fajardo University of Science of Physical Culture and Sports, where she worked as a professor.

Master's degree in Sports Training for High Competition, she participated in national and international scientific events and the results that as a pedagogue she has known how to promote, both in instruction and in the formation of values in her students.
