Cuban baseball player Yoandry Garlobo passed away on July 15th, as reported through the Facebook page of the Matanzas province government.
The death occurred at 46 years of age as a result of a decompensation of the diabetes he suffered from, explained the Inder leadership in the territory.
A native of Jovellanos, Garlobo stood out with the Matanzas teams and with Cuba as runner-up in the I World Baseball Classic, where his career reached its peak when he was selected to the All-Star team of the 1st World Baseball Classic in 2006.
Garlobo was a star of the first edition of the World Baseball Classic and left a profound mark on the history of these games and on national baseball. He remained active for 16 seasons and was one of the cornerstones of the Cuban team that achieved the runner-up title in the inaugural edition of the Classic.
From his trajectory in the top Cuban tournaments, he left notable statistics, such as an excellent batting average of .335, thanks to 1236 hits in his 3770 at-bats, according to statistics reflected by the specialized site Swing Completo.
Additionally, his record includes 198 doubles, 33 triples and 109 home runs, along with 621 runs batted in and 663 runs scored.
His most brilliant campaign was 2005-2006, when the Matanzas native added 96 hits, including 12 two-baggers, one triple and 12 home runs, for a batting average of .407
He was included in several national selections, in which he offered good performance, such as in the 1995 youth World Championship, held in the U.S. city of Boston, when he was included in the All-Stars of the event.
But the brightest point of his successful career came during the inaugural version of the Classic, when from the bench he became one of the pillars of the best result Cuba achieved in the five editions of these tournaments.
The main authorities of Inder, led by president Osvaldo Vento Montiller, have expressed their regret and condolences for the unfortunate loss.
