On the morning of Saturday, September 26, the Cuban diplomat José Antonio Arbesú Fraga, 80 years old, died in Havana after a long and painful illness.
Arbesú was responsible for the Americas Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.
He held important positions and responsibilities, including that of head of the then Cuban Interests Section in Washington and was part of Cuba's delegation in the negotiations that led to peace agreements in Southern Africa.
For several years he headed the Americas Area of the International Relations Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, where he continued the foundational work of Comandante Manuel Piñeiro.
From those positions Arbesú took on delicate missions, mainly related to internationalist policy and aid and support to progressive forces and the struggle of the peoples of Our America and other regions of the world.
In that and many other tasks Arbesú demonstrated great political acumen and very balanced performance.
