Cuban boxer Jorge Luis Romero, runner-up in the 54 kilogram division at the I World Boxing Championship, passed away in Havana following complications with high blood pressure.
Romero inscribed his name in silver at the global event held at the coliseum of the Ciudad Deportiva in Havana, where he made his debut with a victory over Dominican José Caba and added three more wins.
His next victims were Ugandan John Byaruhanga, Argentine Hugo Aguilera, and Soviet David Torosyan, before falling by decision at the hands of Puerto Rican Wilfredo Gómez.
A medalist in other high-level tournaments, he was characterized by his bravery in the ring and mastery of technique, qualities that he instilled in his students when he worked as a trainer. His performance in the national Playa Girón championships and in the international Giraldo Córdova Cardín Boxing tournament were of great importance.

After the World Championship, Romero retired from active sport and devoted himself to working as a trainer alongside fellow former boxer Luis Felipe Martínez. The 'Toro' was 66 years old when he died.
