The journalist and researcher from Cienfuegos, Andrés García Suárez, who had just turned 89 years old, died this Sunday, July 26 at the Specialized Outpatient Center Héroes de Playa Girón, in the Pearl of the South, from illnesses associated with Covid-19.
A member of the UPEC and UNEAC, a cherished and highly respected figure by all, he was born on July 21, 1932 in Cienfuegos and from a young age joined the struggles for liberation against the Batista tyranny.
The writer and researcher was also an actor and chronicler of the armed popular uprising of September 5, 1957 in Cienfuegos, an achievement to which he dedicated several published books, co-authored with historian Orlando García Martínez.
Author of more than ten published volumes, primarily on historical topics, Andrés continued collaborating almost until the end of his days in the newspaper 5 de Septiembre, whose subdirectorship he held until his retirement. He was a founder of that publication, as well as of the similar Vanguardia, of Santa Clara.
After his retirement, he was a frequent contributor to several publications, especially in the treatment of historical topics.
Winner of the Antonio Hurtado del Valle Prize for Lifetime Achievement, he also merited, among other recognitions, the distinctions Raúl Gómez García and Félix Elmusa.
