The world of radio bids farewell to Jaime Almirall-Suárez, Cuban radio host, producer, editor, writer and director, who died in Miami, according to colleagues and friends who confirmed it through social media. His name is closely linked to the memorable weekly program "Esto no tiene nombre", which he created and hosted between 1982 and 1993 on Radio Progreso.
Self-taught in the field of radio broadcasting, Almirall-Suárez graduated in 1974 from Advanced Music Studies at the Ignacio Cervantes Professional Development Institute in Havana, directing much of his work toward the dissemination and promotion of Cuban music.
During 32 years of career at broadcasting stations in Cuba, he received multiple awards at the National Radio Festival for productions dedicated to figures such as violinist Brindis de Salas (1977), performer Bola de Nieve (1979), and the program "Cuban Son, National and International Origin and Projection" (1980). In 1993 he received the Distinction for Cuban Culture.
That same year he emigrated to the United States and settled in Miami. Between 1995 and 1996 he was production director at Heftel Broadcasting Corporation (HBC), working for stations such as WAQI Radio Mambi, WQBA 1140, WAMR Amor 107.5 and WRTO Salsa 98.3 FM.
Former Cuban Television director Yin Pedraza Ginori described him as "one of the creators who must be mentioned when the true history of Cuban radio is written, without censorship", and lamented that "the suffocating circumstances that existed in Cuba prompted him to emigrate, and with that Cuban listeners lost the pleasure of hearing that formidable Esto no tiene nombre and his other programs, where talent, originality and good taste prevailed".
His legacy remains as a mandatory reference for understanding the history and evolution of radio in Cuba and in the Hispanic community of the United States.
