On August 16th, Cuban medicine loses another of its devoted sons. Cuba's nephrology community says goodbye to Dr. Charles Magrans Buch, professor, mentor and founder of the specialty in our country, founder of the Institute of Nephrology "Dr. Abelardo Buch López", undisputed father of studies on the quality of hemodialysis and the main Cuban figure in studies of glomerulopathies.
Magrans was born in Santiago de Cuba on April 28, 1932. He began his teaching career in 1963 at the Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital "Joaquín Albarrán" in the subjects of Clinical Medicine and Propaedeutics. Due to his vast academic and scientific preparation, he participated in the development of plans and programs for postgraduate training in the specialty of Nephrology.
Dr. Magrans also left his mark at the Institute of Cardiology, where he assumed institutional leadership during a stage of his fruitful life.
His brilliant clinical knowledge made his practice a paradigm of teaching and care that transformed any medical topic, no matter how complex and difficult, into a solved problem.
He was also Full Professor and Consultant, Merit Researcher, Merit Academic of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, Founding Member of the Cuban Society of Nephrology, Member of the International Society of Nephrology, and Founding Member of the Pan-American Society of Dialysis and Transplantation.
For his unquestionable trajectory, he was deserving of multiple recognitions, among them the "José Tey" Medal, the "Fernando Ortiz" Medal, the "Manuel Fajardo" Distinction, the "For Cuban Education" Distinction, and a diploma of recognition for his outstanding trajectory of 30 years in medical education.
His work is reflected in his scientific articles published in various international books and in two textbooks: "Hemodialysis and Chronic Kidney Disease" and "Glomerular Diseases".
His modesty and simplicity accompanied him throughout his life. The work of great people remains engraved forever in everything that will be done in the future. Thus declares Dr. in Medical Sciences and nephrologist Jorge Pérez Oliva, on behalf of the nephrologists of our country.
Professor Magrans died as a result of COVID at 89 years of age.
