Ángel Pérez Herrero, a prominent historian, teacher of several generations of university students, and widely known for his participation in the television program Escriba y Lea, passed away this Friday in Havana at the age of 81.
Born on May 8, 1942 in the Cuban capital, he was a prominent figure in the nation's education and culture, working as a teacher, lecturer, historian, and writer.
A graduate in Pedagogy and Legal Sciences, his career included roles as a rural teacher and director of literature at the University Extension Commission. He taught at the University of Havana, where he also served as a historian.
Pérez Herrero stood out for his educational work both in Cuba and abroad, including countries such as São Tomé and Príncipe, Cape Verde, Mexico, and Guatemala, as well as at international events.
Author of significant publications such as Ramón López Velarde y Octavio Smith: trayectorias poéticas and Unión Soviética: política, arte y literatura, Pérez Herrero also contributed to Cuban television in the program Escriba y Lea.
He received numerous recognitions, including the José Tey Medal and the Rafael María de Mendive Distinction, for his exemplary contribution to Cuban education.
His legacy endures through the generations of historians he trained, profoundly marking Cuban history and culture with his passionate teaching and his dedication to the dissemination of the nation's historical, cultural, and artistic values.
In a note published by the UH, the History Department of the University of Havana deeply laments his passing and extends its most heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
