Former baseball player for the Santiago de Cuba Avispas in the National Series, Pedro Poll, was hospitalized at the end of this year due to a heart attack and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit of the Provincial Hospital "Saturnino Lora", according to official sources.

Sports reporter from that territory Brita García Alberteris detailed on her Facebook profile that the renowned Santiago baseball player was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit "after suffering a heart attack".

"The doctors performed the necessary tests and determined that the patient is stable. The INDER authorities are grateful to the Public Health workers who are treating the current first base coach of the Avispas. Quick recovery to an exceptional man", García added.

Poll, one of the traditional figures of Santiago baseball, retired from active baseball in 2018, after two decades of dedication to this sport.

He participated in 20 national series with the Santiago de Cuba team, known as the "Steamroller" during that era, which won six national titles. Throughout his career, he hit 1577 hits, 269 doubles and 92 home runs and drove in 892 runs for a batting average of 302. In addition, he was an excellent first base defender, with a fielding percentage of 990 and only 104 errors in 1,466 games.

Poll was characterized by his ability to hit in all directions of the field, especially when there were runners in scoring position in key game situations, as happened in that memorable final against the former Havana team.

Although he is originally from the Holguín municipality of Mayarí Abajo, he developed as a player in the Santiago municipality of Mella, which is why he always gave his talent to the Santiago de Cuba team.

He was a teammate of great stars such as Orestes Kindelán, Antonio Pacheco, Rey Isaac, Norge Luis Vera and Ormary Romero, and reached fourth place in the Avispas batting order during some seasons, especially after the retirement of great hitters.
