The membership of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences seeks to represent thinkers and innovators from around the world, notable for their contributions in very different professions and branches of knowledge.



The appointment of the Historian of the City of La Habana as a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences responds to the mandate granted to this honorary association since its founding in 1780: "to cultivate the arts and sciences that may increase the interest, honor, dignity and happiness of free, independent and virtuous people".



In the inaugural years, personalities such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton were members of this United States Academy. The institution is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is composed of more than 4,000 members from the United States and over 600 external honorary members, among whom stand out Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Nelson Mandela, Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and British anthropologist Mary Douglas Leakey.



The membership of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences seeks to represent thinkers and innovators from around the world, notable for their contributions in very different professions and branches of knowledge. Its studies prioritize research and analysis in science and technology, global security and international affairs, social policy, education and humanities. Leal has been distinguished with a long list of recognitions, including national awards for History, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Cultural Heritage for a Lifetime of Work, as well as ten Honoris Causa degrees from various universities around the world.
