The playwright and writer Eugenio Hernández, author of essential works in Cuba's theatrical scene, received today the National Literature Prize 2020 awarded by the Cuban Book Institute.
The Covid-19 pandemic delayed the award ceremony for the literary figure, who received it this afternoon from home and dedicated it to those who dedicate their lives to defending the theater and letters.
On the occasion of the celebration of Book Day, the national prizes for Social Sciences and Humanities, and for Publishing 2020 were also awarded at the headquarters of Cuba's Ministry of Culture.
The award in these specialties went this time to Ibrahim Hidalgo de Paz and Mercy Ruiz, both recognized as prominent figures for Cuban literature in areas such as research and promotion.
Regarding Hidalgo de Paz, the jury highlighted "his extensive work in research and his abundant and contributory work that have led him, especially, in the field of Martí studies and the History of Cuba."
In referring to Mercy Ruiz's work, they praised her contribution as "editor, manager and promoter of the book, as well as participant in important milestones in the history of the book in Cuba."
The recognitions were given by the Minister of Culture, Alpidio Alonso, and the president of the Cuban Book Institute, Juan Rodríguez Cabrera.
Among Hernández's emblematic texts stand out Mi socio Manolo, Calixta Comité, Emelina Cundiamor and Lagarto Pisabonito, which elevated a series of endearing characters, with whom generations of Cubans have identified themselves.
His work also highlights the theatrical piece María Antonia for its authentic character and being a reflection of the revolutionary period that began in the largest of the Antilles in 1959, which is featured in several international anthologies.
The highest award in Cuban letters adds to his artistic trajectory along with the National Theater Prize that he received for his work as stage director and general director of the Teatro Caribeño company.
His work has deep roots in Cuba's identity and has represented numerous playwrights from Latin America and the Caribbean with a clear vision of the African heritage that characterizes the continent.
