In remembrance of Humberto Solás: Gibara smells of cinema

July 4, 2018

From the entrance to Gibara, the White Villa of the Crabs, you are greeted by signs and stickers scattered throughout the city, which are part of the communication campaign Lights, Gibara, Action! If you continue walking through its streets you find a large part of the cast of Cuban actors enjoying the sea breeze and also guests such as Puerto Rican Benicio del Toro who arrives for the second time, Spanish screenwriter and director Félix Viscarret, winner of the Goya Award, Mexican director Demián Bichir among others. This festival is also held on the tenth anniversary of the physical disappearance of Humberto Solás.

Silvio Rodríguez's concert in Plaza da Silva marked the opening of the 14th edition of the Gibara International Film Festival, which runs until July 7. The troubadour gifted emblematic songs from his repertoire to the attendees such as El Papalote, El Necio, Ojalá and Rabo de nube. As a finale to the concert, a visual artist from the region gave Silvio a painting titled La perla de Gibara. Also during the first day at Cine Jibá, the Lucía Awards were presented to three outstanding Cuban actors: Mirta Ibarra, Salvador Wood and Enrique Pineda-Barnet, a director who in 2016 received the Premio Excelencias Cuba.

Of the more than forty films in competition, the following are screened: La hoja de la caleta, La suerte del salao, La sed humana and La torre, the latter won the Humberto Solás Award for cinema in construction in the previous edition and this year is part of the festival's official selection. There will also be a tribute to El lado oscuro del corazón by filmmaker Eliseo Subiela, the special presentation of Spotlight, among others. There are also exhibitions: "Gibara: un pueblo de película" by Casey Stoll and "Es la esperanza" by Gabriel Guerra Bianchini.

The Event Organizing Committee noted that the call is dedicated to children and adolescents, who are living an intense summer, as well as to the people of Gibara and the guests, whom it invites above all to fill the cinemas to capacity.
