Mireya Luis Elected Member of the International Volleyball Federation Council

The Cuban Mireya Luis was elected member of the Board of Directors of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), during the opening session of its first virtual congress.

Mireya, three-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion, and former captain of the Morenas del Caribe, was the candidate with the most votes received for the position of minority gender member on said board, according to the digital edition of the sports publication JIT.

The legendary player received 137 votes, while Scottish Margaret Ann Fleming was equally selected with 125, as well as Venezuelan Judith Rodríguez (37).

JIT also highlights that Fleming is the current executive director of the Scottish Volleyball Federation and vice president of the European confederation, while Rodríguez leads the Venezuelan federation and serves as second vice president of the South American confederation.

Luis, champion in the Olympic Games of Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000, is part of the Cuban Volleyball Federation (FCV) and the board of directors of the North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (Norceca).

From her position at the FCV, among other activities, she promotes beach volleyball with the celebration in Varadero, since 2011, of a phase of the Norceca Circuit, which contributes to the development of Cuban players and to the promotion of the sport in the country.

At the congress, Mark Eckert, from Canada; Mushtaque Mohammed, from Trinidad and Tobago; Glenn Quinlan, from St. Kitts and Nevis, and Felix Sabio, from Honduras, were elected by acclamation as members of the FIVB board of directors, nominated by Norceca.

As alternates are Sabina Clement, from British Virgin Islands, and Allan Sharp, from Belize.
