Cuban swimmer Luis Vega set a national record in the 200-meter butterfly stroke, with a time of 1:58.58 minutes, improving his previous personal best by almost a second (1:59.23), achieved at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla-2018.
The record by the Havana native came in one of the finals of the Russian Olympic qualifying tournament, which is being held in Kazan, in which the Cuban participates as part of a scholarship granted by the International Swimming Federation (FINA).
In an interview with Granma, Vega had said that he is more focused on that event and that, although it was difficult to reach the Olympic standard (1:56.48), "it is not something impossible." He and his teammate Lorena González, also staying in Kazan, will compete again in the first week of June. It will be another opportunity for the swimmer to reach the Olympic record.
