Cuban musician Paquito D'Rivera will be recognized at the next benefit gala of the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA) in New York on October 16 with the León Ichazo Award, the organization reported, dedicated to increasing the presence of Hispanic artists in the entertainment world and media.
The award was created in posthumous tribute to Cuban film director León Ichazo (1948-2023), author of the films "Sugar as Bitter" and "El Cantante", with Marc Anthony and Jennifer López about the life of the late performer and member of the Fania All-Stars, Héctor Lavoe, as well as "Piñero", about the life of the renowned poet and actor, founder of the popular Nuyorrican Poets Cafe, Miguel Piñero (1946-1988)
Mexican actor and choreographer Angel Sigala will receive the special Emerging Artist award and on the list of honorees is also actress Rosal Colón ("Between Riverside", "Crazy"), among others, according to a HOLA statement.
ANNOUNCEMENT
Among the rest of the previously announced honorees, the following stand out: director, choreographer and ten-time Tony and Drama Desk nominee, Graciela Daniele; Colombian director and choreographer Sergio Trujillo, the first Latino to receive the Tony Award for Best Choreography and Dominican actress Linedy Genao ("Bad Cinderella"), among others.
"This gala is an event that recognizes the titanic work of Latin creators and protagonists of the performing arts in the Big Apple. Everyone is invited to be part of this special evening dedicated to celebrating our theater," said Fernando Cárdenas, from HOLA's board of directors.
