The legacy that Cuban poet Nancy Morejón left to the Instituto Cervantes, in whose "Box of Letters" objects from the most important writers in the Spanish language are kept, has rested there since last Tuesday.
This armored chamber at the institute's headquarters in Madrid, in what was once the safe of an old bank, received several items from the Cuban author, who expressed herself as "very moved and honored" by delivering objects that were "very intimate" and also "linked to the history of Cuba."
In statements to Efe, the playwright and translator also thanked the "fraternal tone" and the "attention" that this public institution dedicated to promoting Spanish in the world showed her.
"This is an act of faith, of recognition, imagine yourself in this instance, it is a tremendous honor," asserted Morejón, the third Cuban to receive this recognition after Alicia Alonso and Leonardo Padura.
A recognition that comes with a small safe-deposit box in which Morejón deposited a seashell that accompanied her "her whole life," from the beaches of the northern part of the island "where Cuban identity and independence are born."
