The news that well-known journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso contracted COVID-19 came to light after he himself announced the positive result of his PCR test several weeks after having received the complete vaccination regimen (3 doses) of the Abdala drug.
The young communicator revealed the event from his official Facebook profile and detailed that he is in good health, despite the fact that the pandemic in Cuba "is at its worst moment".
The reporter was in charge of directing the news desk of the National News Program of Cuban Television (NNTV) because the current chief had also contracted the disease.
Alonso recalled that he was one of the first journalists to cover news of the pandemic's development in the country and insisted from then on that "an important part of staying safe depended on individual behavior". He pointed out that, with the production and approval of the Abdala vaccine, he has been safe, "like millions of others", from contracting the virus.
He commented that, nevertheless, now it has "been his turn" to get sick, and that "sometimes contagion reaches you inside the house".
Many people sent him kind messages of concern and wishes for a speedy recovery, like the one from his colleague Pavel Otero, who wrote to him that "catching COVID-19 now is like walking in flip-flops on the beach sand and not getting sand on yourself. It's very difficult to come out unscathed. Keep taking care of yourself. Everything will go well for you. You'll see."
Subsequently, Alonso announced that he had lost his sense of smell and was experiencing some other mild symptoms. He recounted that a doctor recommended that he apply "drops in his nose, plenty of fluids and broths of all kinds, like when you have childhood flu".
