Cuban composer Edesio Alejandro, noted for his contribution to electronic music on the island, will be recognized with the Batuta Award for the excellence of his work, the Latin Institute of Music (ILM) reported today.
Edesio Alejandro is among the ten award recipients of the first edition of this prize, which also includes British composer Michael Nyman, fellow Cuban Leo Brouwer, Ecuadorian Jorge Saade, and Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo.
In just the last year alone, the musician was recognized as Doctor Honoris Causa in Mexico, completed his first fiction feature film in London, United Kingdom, and participates as a judge on the musical television show in the Caribbean nation the competition "Adolfo Guzmán".
The composer has directed and orchestrated more than 40 theatrical works for various theater groups on the island, stands out for the variety of musical styles and forms he has undertaken ranging from classical to contemporary, and his music has been featured in nearly 60 film productions.
He also possesses a dozen recognitions awarded by institutions from Cuba, Italy, Brazil, France, among other countries.
According to the global president of the Institute, Daniel Martin Subiaut, the Batuta awards and that institution, founded in 1921, recently signed an alliance, which will relaunch this platform to five continents and strengthen relations with other entities in the entertainment industry.
As a traveling award, Batuta recognizes the work of geniuses of classical and concert music in its natural state, where recordings are not required but rather a trajectory of more than two decades, at minimum, standing out at a global level.
The awards ceremony will take place on October 5 at the Roberto Cantoral Cultural Center in Mexico City.
